Cultural & History Program
CN11 - Life along the Mighty Mekong – 14 Days Context:
The name "MEKONG" comes from its Thai name, Mae Nam Khong,
or “Mother of all Rivers.” As its path weaves through
six different countries, it influences the nature and societies
of the entire Indochina Peninsula, and serves as the lifeblood for
many of the region’s people. In China, it runs through high
snow-capped mountains and lush verdant lowlands as it brings elements
of cultural influence from one village to another.
The source of the Mekong River is in the Tibetan mountains; from
its pristine origin it cuts through a narrow valley parallel to
the Yangtze and Salween Rivers, before it reaches Yunnan Province.
Here, skirting the shores of the river, we discover the peoples
and traditions of various small villages. We see the progression
of Tibetan Buddhist culture to that of Thai Buddhism, the unfolding
change in ethnicities and traditions. As we move from the high fringes
of the Tibetan plateau down to the lower border areas with Southeast
Asia, sampling a broad variety of river landscapes along the way,
we experience an intimate journey into the diverse cultures that
comprise this enchanting area of China.
After we leave China, you may venture into the Golden Triangle,
and on to the Southeast Asian tributaries of this mighty river.
